Top 10 Wardrobe Essentials

confettiWoohoo!! New year, new visions, new trends and most importantly new essentials to add to our already blossoming wardrobe for 2019!!  I am happy to see a few trends go and I can say I’m not that happy to see a few trends coming back in style.  Look let’s not waste any more time and jump right in with both feet and see what we need to add to our wardrobe:

  1. Good-bye skinny jeans: Yes this trend is finally coming to a happy end♥ and those body-types that shouldn’t rock a pair of skinny jeans just may thank the fashion trend setters for putting this one to bed.  Say HELLO! to Loose fit jeans with a little detailed embellishment to them:

Notice the loose jeans aren’t too loose and still give a nice silhouette – the little embellishments are a nice touch and not too over the top.  I think this new trend is going to look great with several wardrobes.

2. Corduroy Blazer: Pause, before you all start to throw your shoes at the screen or me, I have to tell you the new corduroy isn’t the corduroy that you mom or dad rocked back in the day.  The cuts are more fresh and very feminine and guys the corduroy blazers for you are extremely flattering and chic:

corduroy blazer No more wide shoulders and unflattering shapes, the corduroy blazer is fem and sexy and even some of the top celebs have donned the corduroy look recently i.e. Blake Lively and Alexa Chung:

3. Cargo Pants: I’m sorry what is there not to love about this trend?  I think cargo pants are so diversified and can be worn casual or dressed up for a night out with friends.  Cargo pants have come along way from those that my painter use to wear:

cargo pantsLook at how you can put a great pair of heels on with your cargo pants and change-up the silhouette.  Cargo pants now come in different fabrics that change the feel and look as well as how they are made.  I cannot wait to see how you fashion forward fashionista’s will rock this style. (side note be careful not to purchase a pair that has no structure to the cargo pocket).

4. Headbands:  This trend is really fresh and can take a bad hair day into a really cute hair day.  I like that they have matured the headband, bling’d it out and gave them flowers like a mini fascinator, that any proper English lady would love to wear:

5. Layered Necklace: Ladies I’m not speaking of your moms pearls, I’m talking about fashion forward necklaces that look too stunning when layered.  I have been rocking this trend for about a year and half because, I think it just looks sexy and adds such a simple touch that calls attention to your gorgeous neckline… It’s a win-win situation, one that you just cannot go wrong with… Wait, yes you can if you go all crazy and start looking like a rapper for the late 90’s:

6. Denim Shirt: I’m speaking of a good denim shirt one that can be tied in the front, tucked in, worn like a jacket over a really cute maxi dress, or a pleated skirt. OMG!! you will lose your mind- my favorite denim shirts are from Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger you can do no wrong with either, but there are several other choices:

7. High Heel Loafers: This trend needs to stay forever, ever-ever.. lol!! I cannot begin to say how much I love a good high heel loafer and one of my favorite is from Tabitha Simmons her Mika High Heel Loafer is too gorgeous and comfy for words.  They are worth every penny and I cannot say enough about them.. Price point is $745.00:

tabitha simmons mika loaferThis is one sexy shoe if I may say so myself- plus it can be styled casual or dressed up and looks fabulous with a great pair of jeans.

8.  Chunky Cardigan: Who doesn’t love a fabulous chunky luxurious cardigan? I mean now you can find these fabulous cardigan’s with beautiful details on the sleeves and in such gorgeous colors.  I love this trend and I hope it stays around for a while:

You can thank Kim K. and her other half for this ridiculous come back.  I’m not posting a picture of this trend because, I don’t see the need.

10. Black Tights: I love black tights and especially in the winter- a good pair of black tights can take you a long way and can add just the right touch to your wardrobe:

3 Simple Tip Mixing and Matching Patterns

Yes I’ve heard your cries regarding, how do you mix and match prints/patterns. This trend is actually a lot of fun- adds more creativity and expands your wardrobe.  sherbert and flowersI find mixing and matching colors, prints and fabrics a little liberating and brings such enjoyment to seeing what I can give birth to.  Let me just say this, it does take a little imagination and creativity to see these prints mingling and know how to tie all of it together.

Here are my three (3) tips for Mixing and Matching Prints:

1. Pair Mixed Prints with Neutral Solids: I think until you really get the full gist of mixing and matching this is a fabulous way to introduce the patterns and textures.  You can add a sense of subtleness to your mixed patterns by simply breaking them up using layers of neutral solids how Designer Derek Lam did for his collection.bold print with neutrals2. Make Sure Your Prints Have Some Kind of Similar Elements: Your patterns don’t have to match, they just have to go – I mean they should have a family relation.  Color is the main key, it’s the unifying element the basic color rule to keep in mind is: Find a single color that appears in all of the patterns.

Take for instants, my foundation was this beautiful cobalt blue floral blouse, light blue pin stripped wide legged pants (dark blue stripes), and a fabulous Cobalt blue Moto-jacket. The colors play off of each other, but ties everything together which marries this look together seamlessly.

3. Play with Size and Density of Patterns: Now take a deep breath- this is a little more advanced.  First, match bigger graphic prints with smaller ones; like a large abstract geometric print would look totally fabulous with a smaller floral.. Much like our first photograph the sherbet stripped blouse and the smaller floral/animal print skirt (LOVING IT!!)

Look, the whole idea behind mixing and matching is Enjoy Yourself!! Have a little fun don’t be afraid of trying new things and doing a few bold moves.. I cannot wait to see the looks that you all produce and if you have any questions please feel free to post your comments..

Happy styling!

StyleCon NYC

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAI had the pleasure of attending StyleCon NYC – 2018, this past Saturday at Root Studio, which was turned into a fabulous open modern space to all the influencers, fashionistas and top brands to mingle and network.  I cannot begin to tell you all how fabulous this event truly was.  Let me introduce you to the vendors that made such and incredible contribution to StyleCon.

We was treated to a very different and refreshing dessert, that is made in California

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA My/Mo Mochi Ice Cream is wrapped in Mochi dough, which gives it a chewy but soft texture and they come in a huge variety of flavors from Salted Caramel, Vanilla Bean, Sweet Mango (one of my faves), the other Ripe Strawberry, Green Tea just to name a few. Then we were offered fabulous health snacks to charge ourselves up on like protein bars, Core hydration water, and my new go to drink Suja Green Delight, which is a sweet nourishing smoothie, that burst with hearty greens and juice fruits and super greens:

I’ll give you more of the fabulous vendors and products at the end of our article.  Now on to the event!! We had our stunning host Mr. Jay Manuel that truly brought life into each panel and topic discussion. The first panel was “Models with A Message” that brought Becca Thorpe-VP Muse NYC, Director of Curve, Charlie Howard-Model, Founder of All Women Project, Hunter McGrady-Model, Curvy Sports Illustrated and Khoudia Diop-Model/Actress:

This powerful panel spoke on how important it is that the fashion industry finally needs to make changes to the “idea” of what body-image should be.  Most women are slightly or even over weight and some are just simply built differently, meaning they have natural curves and aren’t overweight by any means.  Listening to this panel it made me smile because, currently I’m a full-figured mogul and I am working on my weight, but not for others,  but for myself.  I want to be healthier eating better and celebrating my curves.. This is exactly what this powerful panel was imparting to all in attendance (Body Acceptance).

Next we had “Passion to Profit” this panel brought together the leading founders of the top brands that we are all familiar with. Shirley Yang – Founder of Muses App (currently not avail to those with Androids), Cheryl Eisen– Founder of Interior Marketing Group, and Stacey Boyd– Founder and CEO of Olivela:
These three very powerful women spoke on the importance of jumping and taking the leap into your dream, how not to allow yourself to feel that when you fall this is your place where you will stay… I felt such a major connection with Founder Shirley Yang, because she has a ring that state “This too shall pass,” which many of you who know me, can say this is my philosophy. This statement means, things happen in our lives and the hard lessons that we may have to learn and take away, are simply temporary and you can overcome your obstacles with something called sticktoitiveness.. These ladies are embolden others to believe and reach out for their own dreams.. Great topic!!

Then you won’t believe this, but yes Me – Sonya LaRae- had a fangirl moment.. LOL!! Why you may say, well I so admire this woman’s drive and passion for business.. It’s none other than one and only Founders of Marque Media, Lifestyle Influencer Heidi Nazarudin:

Heidi was apart of the panel “The Road to Digital Success” with Kendra Bracken-Ferguson: Founder, CAA Braintrust, Kelly Walton– Head of Experiential Global Marketing at Under Armour.  These ladies are powerhouses in branding and market development, and impart valuable gems to those who are starting up and those of us whom have been in the industry for a very long time… Helping influencers to realize there is more than just being a personality online,  that you must plug in which, will also require you to be personable and honoring your obligations and commitments to the brands that sign on with you.  Knowing what you need from the brand as well as laying out clear guidelines.  This panel by far was priceless:

Mr. Jay Manuel, Heidi Nazarudin, Kendra Bracken-Ferguson and Kelley Walton

When you thought it couldn’t get any better well they introduce Five time Olympic Medalist CO-Founder of Grander- Ms. Nastia Liukin:
GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERANastia, spoke on “Never Quit On a Bad Day” she gave us such a wonderful experience of when she was 12 yrs. old she came home from a very trying, hard and frustrating day at the gym, and told her mom emphatically, I WANT TO QUIT GYMNASTICS.. Her mother stated to her, “you cannot quit on a bad day.” Nastia didn’t know why a few weeks passed and the very difficult and challenging routine that had been frustrating her to no end, she finally could land all the elements and was just beaming with pride.. When she came home Nastia, stated to her mother I did it mom 3 times in a row nailed it!! Her mom congratulated her and said “well, you now can quit.”  Nastia, looked puzzled and her mom said, the other week you said you wanted to quit.. I said not today because it was a bad day- You never can quit on a bad day..  I loved this story because, many times we run into hardships, failures and major disappointments, where we feel we need to quit.. Now, I will impart this fine lesson to others that I mentor and tell them they cannot quit on a bad day..

Our last panel of the day was “Beauty Trailblazers” that featured: Maile Pacheco– Founder of beGlammed, Lauren Ing– President of SMD Cosmetics and Rachel Ten Brink– Co-Founder of Scentbird, Deck of Scarlett.  These 3 women are true visionaries in their field of Beauty and impart the importance of developing and researching your brand.  Knowing the demand of your clientele, how you can benefit your bottom line by offering quality.  I truly enjoyed this powerful group of ladies that spoke of try, try and try again.. Which seemed to be the running them of this stunning event:

Jay Manuel, Maile Pacheco, Lauren Ing and Rachel Ten Brink

If that wasn’t enough StyleCon gave all of us that attended fabulous Swag bags that truly were stuffed with the best products and offers to make your head spin.  If you haven’t gone to StyleCon and your making your mark in this very competitive fashion business, then I encourage you to go.

As promised in the begin of our article we wanted to feature more of the fabulous vendors:

Puff Delights (Organic Cotton Candy)

The Better Skin Company

rose & thread – Made in NYC

ettitude – (Sleep first, Think later, Dream Always)

Health-ADE Kombucha

These are just a few of the brands that where in attendance:

Why Get a Color Analysis

color_wheelMany of my clients aren’t totally clear about what a “color analysis” actually is, and why you need to know this? Many are skeptical about color analysis, and some feel they can wear the rainbow/array of colors.  Can the shades you wear really make that much of a difference?

Let me start off by saying, YES- color is everything and breathes life into you and your wardrobe. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe a German philosopher (1850’s) realized the connections between different colors and how the different hues accented or brought out a person color, which made her create the “color psychology.”  The “color psychology” focused on the importance of color and how it affected thinking, feelings and reactions in people- that also showed how colors illuminated individuals complexions.

Having your color-analysis done doesn’t mean throwing your entire wardrobe away (I know that took a load off your shoulders)- Having your color analysis done will clarify the colors that compliment you and brightens your undertone.  There are four “true” color seasons (a little side note: There are also subcategories in each season), just like in a calendar year: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.  Most people are a combination of two, resulting in light or dark versions of each season.  I find people are amazed at how stark some of the differences are when fabric samples are draped across them.  They see clear changes in complexion.  The wrong colors will make you look sallow or washed out, it can make you look tired and aged.  Where the right colors will boost, lighten and make you look glowing.

Here are my top 6 reasons you should get a color analysis:

  1. You will know what colors to wear in your hair, makeup, wardrobe and accessories.
  2. Shopping for makeup and going to the hair salon will be easy and efficient.
  3. When you’re wearing the colors that align with you, your energy will increase, your self-confidence will increase and you’ll give your attitude a major boost.
  4. You will declutter your wardrobe of pieces that aren’t complimentary to you.
  5. You’ll be able to get dressed quicker, because you’ll remove the guess-work from your wardrobe and will look great in the selections.
  6. Look younger- I think this is the most important element.

Color is very important and knowing what colors work best for you is truly a vital piece to your success.
