Color-Analysis What?

I know most are wondering precisely what is a “Color-analysis?” What does it consist of and, why do you really need one?  I’m about to take you on this significant part of your styling journey and why knowing what your particular color palette consists of will make you look fabulous even on those slight blah days.

Color-analysis= Demonstrates how certain shades are capable of being flattering or, conversely, unflattering by observing the optical illusions that occur on the face when placing specific colors next to the individual.  It is generally agreed that the wrong colors will draw attention to such flaws as wrinkles or uneven skin tone. In contrast, harmonious colors will enhance the natural beauty of the individual, making them appear healthy and fresh-faced.

Wow!! I know that is a lot of information to digest in one sitting but, I’m going to do my best to break all this down in simple little bite fulls.  For me, as a Certified Image Consultant, I love working with my clients and teaching them about their particular “Color-analysis,” as well as educating them on how to bring in the other seasons that will still compliment their individualized color palette.  What are the seasons in which I’m referring?  Most individuals fall in a color category and can touch on others.

20200731_161057Let me use myself as an example:

My color-analysis is that I’m a “Winter/Spring,” Meaning my top notes are Winter: The colors from this season are bright and icy, like a winter’s day, always with subtle blue undertones.  Such as Hollyberry red, Emerald, Evergreen, royal blue magenta, and violet.  My complementary notes are Spring: These colors are clear and bright, just like the colors of a spring day.  The sun is low on the horizon, so everything is imbued with a golden hue… The trees and grass have not yet matured, so they are a bright spring green color, with distinct yellow undertones impart a vibrant, electric appearance… Colors like spring green leafy foliage, red-orange, coral tulips, bright yellow jonquils, and daffodils.

How is this possible?  It has to do with the undertone of my skin, hair, and eye color.  You see, my hair is black, my undertone is red, and my eye color is green, which crosses me into the Spring palette.  I always wear my colors, and I always look great in everything that I wear as well as when I am photographed in my home because I also bring my color palette into my house which makes me look stunning.

Do you understand it a little better than when we first started out? Good!  Now you may want to know what are the seasons you can fall in one of these and cross into another depending on other factors that we do with your color-analysis.

  1. SPRING: These colors are clear and bright, just like the colors of a Spring day.  The sun is low on the horizon, so everything is imbued with the golden hues of the sun.  The trees and grass have not yet matured, so they are tinged with yellow undertones and are a bright spring green color.  Distinct yellow undertones impart a vibrant, electric appearance to everything.  The colors of this season are indeed like a spring bouquet of flowers enveloped in bright spring green leafy foliage: red-orange, coral tulips, bright yellow, jonquils, and daffodils.
  2. SUMMER: The colors of this season are muted with blue undertones (think of looking at the scenery through a dusky summer haze).  Late summer blossoms, a frothy ocean, and white beaches are seen everywhere.  Baby blue, slate blue, periwinkle, powder pink, seafoam green, and slate grey are typical summer colors.
  3. AUTUMN:  These colors are virtually indistinguishable from the vibrant, earthy tones of the season for which they were named.  They are as golden-hued as a fall day, and it is impossible to mistake them for any other season.  Typical colors from the palette include pumpkin, mustard yellow, burnt orange, brown, camel, beige, avocado green, rust, and teal.  Autumn colors are perennially popular because they bring a feeling of warmth and security.
  4. WINTER: The colors from this season are bright and icy, like a winter’s day, always with subtle blue undertones.  To name a few: Hollyberry red, emerald, evergreen, royal blue, magenta, and violet.  Winter inspires pictures of winter berries, pine green conifers, and black and white huskies racing through snow.

Once you have your color-analysis completed, it will carry over into your cosmetics and help you to always wear the right colors that will highlight, brighten, and make you look refreshed.  You will be so surprised what the right tones and shades will do for you and how we work with color-theory to enhance each element that is developed for your signature brand, aka your personal look.

I hope this article has shed a better “Light” on what precisely a color-analysis is and how it can benefit you.  if you are interested in getting your own color-analysis book your consultation today COLOR-ANALYSIS

Eyeshadow Brushes-101

photo of eyeshadow palette

I have read all the emails, DMs, and heard the outcry for a simple lesson on what eyeshadow brushes are used for what in the eyeshadow brush beauty bags.  Take a deep breath, grab your makeup bags, and maybe something to sip if you like while we get into it.

I’m going to start with one of the essential brushes in your beauty bag, which is none other than…

  1. ANGLED EYEBROW BRUSH – Why, would I say this is one of the essential brushes in your kit is because; this brush will frame the windows of your soul those stunning eyebrows…

This flat angled brush makes it easy to draw on feathery strokes for a natural brow.  Now, ladies, this brush isn’t to be mixed up with a liner brush… You may be thinking (hmm?) well, it looks just like my eyeliner brush, here’s the difference.  Eyebrow brushes are short stumpy brushes tightly-packed bristles that ensure it packs on the product cleanly.

2. EYESHADOW STAMP BRUSH – You’re probably thinking eye-whaaat??! What in the world is an Eyeshadow stamp brush? The short compacted bristles make this great for picking up a lot of product and packing it on to the lid.

Eyeshadow Stamp brushes are the perfect brush if you want a great shot of color (Yess!!), this brush is the ideal option.  I know you’ve seen where a makeup artist will have that intense pigmentation on the lid, kind of like making a statement of its own… Loves this is the brush that will deliver that look. I tell my clients to play with this brush get to know it because it will be one tool that you can do a lot of great tricks with.

3. MEDIUM EYESHADOW BRUSH – If you are a beginner, this is where it all begins and starts for you fabulous makeup beauties.  The medium-sized brush has a slight fan, which means it’s easy to apply the perfect amount of eyeshadow.

LaPazions, look this brush will be like you staple in your makeup bag… This brush is every makeup artist go-to brush.  It can do a multitude of beauty tricks when you apply shadow, and the product just sweeps across the lid effortlessly.  LOVE IT!!

4. EYE CONTOUR BRUSH – The angled edge of this brush and slight fanning of the bristles makes it great for sweeping shadow along the socket. This brush, as I stated you want to use along the crease to softly contour the edges of your eye.  This brush will bring depth into the eye bringing as you get better with your brushes; you see how you can change the shape of your eye using this brush.

5. EYE BLENDER BRUSH – The blender brush does precisely as it says, blends the mess out of your shadow.  Another favorite that you will get to know because this brush will keep you from have sharp edges and harsh lines. The long dome-shaped bristles fan out to diffuse eyeshadow pigments flawlessly.  When you see a flawlessly blended eyeshadow look from your favorite YouTube artist, MUA, on Instagram, I guarantee you, they spent a good 5 mins sweeping a blender brush over the shadow.  It gives a blown-out, soft-focus finish that looks gorgeous!

6. CONTOURED BLENDING BRUSH – Designed with a similar purpose as a standard bending brush, the slightly pointed tip of this one makes it perfect for smoking out any shadow in the crease of your eye.

7. FLAT BLENDING BRUSH – While a dome blender brush is excellent for diffusing shadows, a flat blending brush is a little more targeted this is because of the compact bristles, this makes it ideal for smudging any harsh shadow lines.  You do not want those sharp lines that will stand out, you want to have a seamless gradient eye that is what every makeup artist wants to achieve.

8. CUT CREASE BRUSH – If you want to carve out a killer cut crease, bae-bae, this rounded flat brush will help.  The cut crease brush is small enough that you can be super-precise in drawing on the shadow before blending it out with a dome blender brush.  The tiny size makes it a winner for using on the inner corners of your eyes.

9. WING EYELINER BRUSH – Being a little longer than the average angled brush means this is perfect for drawing on a wing.  The tightly packed bristles work with cream, gel, and powder formulas.  Wing eyeliner brushes let you control the fluidity and movement of the makeup so you can draw the thinnest of lines, to building up your line with light strokes until you have a shape you love.

10. FINE POINT EYELINER BRUSH – If you’re used to using a liquid eyeliner, this fine point brush will feel pretty familiar.  The pin-point tip makes it easy to draw on an ultra-thin eyeliner with just a slight flick of the hand.  This fine-point eyeliner brush is a must-have in your brush collection.

11. SMUDGY EYE BRUSH – This little brush has short, tightly packed bristles that work beautifully for applying and smudging creams and shadows along the lash line.

12. PRECISION CONCEALER BRUSH – LaPazions, sometimes you need a small brush to apply concealer around the eyes or on the lids.  Particularly if you want to get right into the inner corners.  By the way, I like to always pick up a second Precision Concealer Brush because it is also useful as a lip brush, which allows you to have precise control of the lip product as you apply it.

LaPazions, I hope I answered your questions in regards to your essential eyeshadow brushes in your beauty kits.  I cannot wait to see the stunning looks that you all create using the correct tools.

Eye”brow” You didn’t know

Face JewelsI know, hold your breath I’m about to discuss those fabulous things that sit so innocently above your eyes, just daring you not to think you know how to brow-glam them.

Before I started to style my eyebrows, I just thought to myself, why is my hair so dark and my brows not as black as my hair… WHY??!! Fast-forward, and now we have a plethora of products to choose from.  There is a powder, pencil, pen, pomade, and gel but, which one is right for you?  This article is going to just tell you a little bit about each of these products and let you see which is suitable for your brows.

PENCIL- This is the most popular, which I keep in my makeup case for clients that prefer pencil instead of powder.  Pencil can give a soft look to your brows, and also you can use it under brow powder for a very natural subtle look.  Eyebrow Pencil is excellent because you can fill in sparse areas, or defining the brow more.  I tell clients that when you first try a pencil, always remember to start at the back of your brow, not the front.  You tend to be a little heavier handed and will lighten up your stroke as you come forward.  I like to Benefits Cosmetics Goof Proof Brows, it’s such a natural product and works well.

EYEBROW POWDER- This product will help fill in any holes or sparse areas in the brows.  Remember, I told you that you can apply powder over a pencil? The reason I stated that is because the powder acts almost like a setting powder and will have your brows last longer and look very natural.  I know many of my clients state they had trouble picking out a shade that really complemented their eyebrows, I recommend you choose a color closer to your base hair color for a softer realistic look.  To use a brow powder, you’ll need an angled brush to effectively fill in your brows with powder.  You’ll need to coat the brush with the formula before dabbing; it on the back of your hand, the sweep in the direction of your hair growth with a light hand.   I like Bobbi Brown’s Brow Powder I keep this in my case for my clients that rather have powder.

Brow powder

POMADE- This is the secret to the bold brows you see all over Instagram and YouTube.  In addition to giving brows a dramatic, defined look, this formula can also give brows a subtle hold.  This product is excellent for those with very sparse eyebrows, and looking for a quick way to fill them in will love a pomade.  If you have thicker brows and decide to use pomade, you will have a dramatic, bold look. One of the leading pomades is by Anastasia Beverly Hills. My personal go-to cream/pomade is Chella Beauty – visit…   I fell in love with this company after receiving a complimentary “brow kit” during StyleCon NYC 2018 and keep this product in my personal makeup kit and have introduced several of my clients to these products…

GEL – This option by many professionals is one of their go-to-options because, it’s one of the quickest and easiest ways to add color, subtle hold, and fullness to the brows.  In fact, they keep brows in place very well.  A gel works well for individuals that have coarse, unruly brows really get an excellent benefit from this product.  I like using this product, and my technique is, I take any extra product off the spoolie… I use small, light-handed strokes, softly backcombing the brows… I think my go-to-product for the gel is Glossier Boy Brow…

These are just a handful of the brow products that are on the market, but we have even touched on markers, wax, or color. The one thing I can say is whichever you do decide to use, make sure that you practice and try out several different brands.  I thought this video was great to share on how to style your brows naturally.

Fragrance Review

I know that we are always looking for a new scent or smell that could be our possible signature smell.  Well, LaPazions- I did the same thing but, there is a story that goes along with this… I have to take you back to my very early years right out of high school, going into university.  I had a good friend that worked as a “nanny” for a very well-known family.  The mother always smelled so divine, and I literally like fell head-over-heels for the fragrance that she wore.  I made it my mission to find out what it was and low and behold it was Antonia’s Flowers, well needless to say I couldn’t afford it on a high school/university budget… WHY!!!??

Now, we’ll fast forward to the present times, and now my favorite fragrance has been retired or no longer being produced… WHY!!?? Ergo, I started trying to locate perfumes that possibly had the same notes or familiar smells.  I purchased the fragrance NEST COCOA WOODS, needless to say, the notes aren’t anything close to “Antonia’s Flowers” (This is a face of disappointment).

Let’s get into the review, NEST COCOA WOODS FRAGRANCE is a havier scent, that I wasn’t really expecting since it was on the listing of perfumes that are comparable to Antonia’s Flowers.  The notes are rather strong of the bittersweet Cocoa (very predominant), also are notes wrapped in white sandalwood, Thai ginger, and dry sequoia woods (which feel like they are all competing for the front-line).  I’m not sure if it’s just my body-chemistry or what but, it didn’t smell that appealing.  With this being stated, I have to tell you all they really thought the packaging through completely.  I love the box; it’s a vibrant deep chocolate color with a floral print and the name placed in a signature way that catches your eye.

The bottle is just as stunning as the box, the thought that was placed in the production of this product is beyond beautiful.  The bottle is like a precise duplicate of the box, right down to the floral design, and the allure of keeping this on your beauty table is all there.

LaPazions, as you all know, I also am looking for the story behind the product, and by far, the Founder, Ms. Laura Slatkin, really delivers why she developed this fragrance.  The story is compelling and has you fall in love with the idea of NEST.  I may not like this particular perfume for myself, but I will be investigating other fragrances that are offered by this brand.  Here is a behind the scent video that details Ms. Slatkin’s passion for this fragrance:

I hope you all enjoyed my review, and I hope if you try this fragrance, you’ll drop me a note and let me know your thoughts.

The Benefits of Concealer

You might be hearing mixed signals in regards to concealer(s)- To use concealer or not to use concealer OH is the question!  Well, my lovely makeupanistas, I’m here to tell you that makeup concealer is a real beauty essential, be it for everyday, special occasions, or occasional makeup usage.  This is one product that I would say never leave out of your makeup bag.

Here is a little history, it’s said that the first “concealers” were used in the 1920s as makeup to camouflage burns, birthmarks, various marks, and even varicose veins.  Now let’s bring this forward to our day and time.  Depending on what you are trying to achieve, concealers are found in a few different forms (liquid, stick, crayon, cream, and powder to cream).

To conceal or not to conceal

Here are the top benefits of using makeup concealer:

  1. Works with the foundation to provide additional coverage to achieve the appearance of a smooth and even skin tone
  2.  Refreshes tired-looking eyes
  3. To disguise puffiness blemishes, scars, and imperfections.
  4. Camouflage pigmentation and dark circles
  5. Lighter dark areas
  6. As a highlighter over cheekbones, brows, chin, and bridge of the nose
  7. To prevent lipstick from bleeding, either by priming lips with a concealer or by adding a little concealer above the lip line
  8. As a base before applying eyeshadow (excellent for making shadows last longer and pop)
  9. Hide tattoos and birthmarks

You now have a clearer understanding of the top benefits of concealers, so let’s get into each of the types of concealers:

Liquid Concealer: This has to be the most popular out of all the forms of concealers because; it works for most skin types.  Liquid concealer also works well for acne spots because it will not bunch up around the acne or settle into the scars.

The go-to concealer that I love and keep in all of my Makeup bags and kits, from Toofaced Cosmetics.  The multi-use sculpting concealer is everything, meaning it goes on flawlessly, you can have a little or a lot of coverage, plus it’s very hydrating gives you skin that kissed feel.

As you also know, I’m a fan of Toofaced Cosmetics foundations so, it’s a real no brainer that the concealers would make my must-haves…

Stick Concealer: Stick concealers are generally thicker, and denser in texture than liquid concealers, and are ideal for covering blemishes and for giving very rough or reddened skin a more even color and texture.  Stick concealer is a full-coverage product that works well on skin that has acne, as well as acne scars, as well as very dark under-eye circles.

L'Oreal Crayon ConcealerCrayon Concealer: Crayon Concealer offers customizable coverage from the finest of blemishes to larger areas of imperfections.  The tip of the crayon allows for precise application, while the side of the crayon can easily canvas a larger area.

Cream Concealer

Cream Concealers:  Cream Concealers are similar to foundation, yes you read that correctly.  The only difference is cream concealers are thicker and sued to hide different pigments by blending the imperfections into the surrounding skin-tone.

Powder-to-Cream ConcealerPowder-to-Cream Concealers: You read that correctly Powder-to-Cream Concealer, not Cream-to-Powder.  This is becoming a real game-changer in the industry.  I thought, wait, this is going to be the breathtaking moment we’ve all been waiting on, and oh yes, it is just that.  See Powder-to-Cream Concealer is a one-step solution that promises to give the same crack-less undereye coverage.  The idea behind powder-to-cream concealer is it starts as a powder, turns into a cream, and sets to a powder finish.  It’s the same long-lasting and creaseless finish that baking powder provides, but in one step and without the wait time.  I know this is simply brilliant, and I love all of it and use this from time to time on myself or on my bridal clients.

Here is a fabulous video that I located on Powder-to-Cream Concealer application:

I really hope this article has helped you with should you use concealer, to which concealer may be best for you… Whichever you choose, just like with primers, you are going to have to do a little trial and error to see which is right for your particular skin type and the type of coverage you are looking for.
